Causes of Religious Radicalisation and How to Prevent it Through a Dynamic Dialogue Process

Dialogue Society Leicester Branch organised a panel discussion with Prof Anwar Alam on the roots of radicalisation and how to alleviate it through a healthy dialogue process.

Prof Anwar emphasised that any radical thought is mostly shaped through the lack of an individual’s social bonds with other individuals. According to Alam, alienated individuals are most prone to foster radical thought and behaviour especially in the case of modern Western societies where immigrants confront mainstream society in ambiguous ways. Prof Alam also pointed out the role of activities such as those of Dialogue Society in promoting peaceful coexistence of different layers of society.

Roundtable with Prof Robert Allison on What can We do to Prevent Violence by Religious Extremism?

Dialogue Society Leicester branch held a roundtable discussion with Prof Robert Allison, Vice Chancellor and President of the Loughborough University, on ‘What can we do to prevent violence by religious extremism?’.

Prof Allison talked about the root causes of religious extremism and discussed how students from over 100 countries can feel at home and live in harmony at Loughborough University owing to set of values in place in the campus.

Book reading camp. We welcome the holly months before Ramadan.

We are launching a three-month reading campaign in order to revive the three months of the holy time and inculcate the habit of reading and individual spirituality in our students.

For this purpose, special books were determined for each age group and individual targets were given. Our campaign started on February 13 and ended on May 12. Each student who completed their goals was given a gift.

Ramadan community iftar with Lord Mayor of Leicester and with many distinguished guests

Dialogue Society Leicester branch held a community iftar in Leicester, hosting more than 100 people from different communities. Lord Mayor of Leicester Councillor Ross Grant along with many other distinguished guests talked about dialogue and tolerance. In addition to delicious Turkish food, the iftar included an astonishing demonstration of calligraphy and Paper marbling (Ebru).

We came together to organize an iftar program together with our student group.

We came together to organize an iftar program together with our student group, in order to understand the blessings of Ramadan and to have conversations about Ramadan. We prepared meals before iftar, and decorated the dining hall with pictures made by our students.

In the Iftar program, iftar was made from our traditional meals and gifts were given to the students.
